I need to close my MEI. Can I shut it down even if I owe taxes?

TF Con · July 07, 2026

You can close the MEI even with an outstanding debt. But be careful: the debt doesn't disappear when you close it. It stays tied to your CPF and can go to active debt collection. In other words, closing without paying only delays the problem. The best move is to settle or arrange an installment plan first. TF Con closes your MEI and also shows you what's still pending, with a plan to pay it off without strain. That way you truly wrap things up, with no surprises knocking at your door later on.

I got a notice that my CNPJ is inapto (inactive/blocked). Does that mean the company was closed? I haven't touched the company in a while. Is it better to reactivate it or shut it down for good? I found out my company has several accumulated tax debts. Can I pay them all off in one installment plan? If I just stop using the CNPJ and do nothing, will the debts disappear on their own?
